Mainspring Arts and the Queer Neurodivergent Writers Network are partnering to deliver a new mentoring programme for queer neurodivergent creatives.
The programme is aimed at UK-based creatives who are looking to achieve specific goals in their practice or overcome a creative barrier they’re facing.
We’re providing mentoring in the following disciplines:
Creative writing (fiction / prose / poetry)
Writing (non-fiction)
Theatre making
Music making
Visual art (film / photography / design)
Plastic arts (sculpture / installation)
Six mentees will each be matched with one of our three mentors: Marie Jiménez, Gayathiri Kamalakanthan and Jorik Mol. Each mentee will receive 12 online sessions with their mentor between August and December 2024.
The mentors
Marie Jiménez is a non-binary, neurodivergent interdisciplinary artist and founder of the production company Cuaba. They studied Fine Art at Chavón La Escuela de Diseño in Dominican Republic and Parsons - The New School in New York. While living in New York they worked as a performance artist and teacher. In 2015 they started production on their first feature film, while working at Altos de Chavon lecturing in video art and mentoring thesis students. Marie has a Masters in Documentary Filmmaking from ECIB in Barcelona; and they are currently pursuing a Masters in Script Writing at ESTC in Lisbon, while developing their second film as director and co-producing a creative documentary. They are interested in developing characters that reflect on identity as fluid; engaging in dialogues where the intimate is form and resource for the political.
Gayathiri Kamalakanthan is a Tamil poet. Their work explores how language shapes adolescence and how we might use it to queer the future. Gayathiri won the Disabled Poets Prize 2024, the Faber & Andlyn Publisher’s Prize 2022 and the Primadonna Fiction Prize 2021. Gayathiri runs Queering Lit, a workshop series on the business of writing for queer writers of colour supported by the Royal Society of Literature. Their debut novel is forthcoming with Faber. Find them at gayathiri.co.uk.
Jorik Mol (he/him) is a writer, activist, former theatremaker and co-director of the QND Network. He has many years experience as an autistic lived experience mentor for queer neurodivergent artists, designers, performers and writers of all stripes. Find him at jorikmol.com.
