During lockdown I have been staying with my partner in Hull, in a very different environment than The Lake District where I usually live and work. I cannot access my studio at the moment, so have moved in to my partner’s bathroom to paint. For my daily exercise, I have been walking and discovering the industrial parts of Hull, which are very much abandoned at the moment which makes the experience of walking through them much more intense in sound, touch, smell and sight. I have been sketching as I have wandered around the area, trying to capture the shapes, and rhythm of the buildings and and the sense of a pause in the usual activity. This sense of pause brings a timelessness to the landscape which has a mixture of old buildings, cobbled roads, mills, chimneys, factories and the river Hull running through it. I am interested in these layers of history which are reflected in the many layers I use throughout the development of the painting and the elements of drawing that peep from in between layers of paint and ink.
The Artistic Process
About the artist
I (Annie Luke Turner) am a dyslexic painter who interprets the feeling of being within the landscape and my links to it. As a child I spent a great deal of time in wild landscapes in Wales, Scotland and the Lake District, as my parents were climbers. I feel very privileged to be a Dyslexic painter, and feel that I am lucky to have skills within spatial awareness and problem solving which I did not understand were so valuable until I started my art education. Paint gives me a different language in which to express myself and interpret what I see which goes beyond spoken and written words. I use mixed media, and the paintings constantly evolve and emerge through a process of layering, deleting and become a conversation between myself and the painting. I don’t know how the painting is going to develop, but put my trust in the process and strap myself in for the ride.
